This hutch is worth its weight in gold, to me.  My Grampa built a similar one for my Mom, and I was always saying how much I loved it; the simple design, and the labor of love that went in to it. The Hub and I were married in July of 2000. That Christmas, we went to Texas, to be with my parents, my grandparents & other family members that had also flown in. Ok, so it was almost my Mom’s whole side of the family. It was great.
Almost all of my childhood Christmas’s were spent at my grandparents home, since we lived in the same town. We would go over on Christmas Eve & have a huge supper, that usually consisted of jumbo, fresh Gulf Coast You-Peel-’Em shrimp, cheesy potato casserole drowning in butter, and way too much food. After we ate dinner, we would all open our presents that night. For Christmas Day, my grandparents would have over any & everybody from our church that didn’t have family in town, or wasn’t going anywhere. So that usually ended up being about 30 some people, plus our family. (This is why we opened our gifts Christmas Eve.) We would have a huge traditional Christmas turkey meal for lunch, then watch the Cowboys get beat. The guys would play football in the front yard. With Grampa watching over us, the kids would roast marshmallows on wire coat hangars, in the fireplace, even though we averaged 70 degree temps in December.Â
Christmas 2000 was my last Christmas that I got to be at that house. With the Hub being in the Navy, we move a lot. Then Grampa & Gramma sold the house, and bought a fab ocean view condo. Times change. But that Christmas was perfect. After we all finished opening our presents and had full bellies, Grampa said he wanted us to all go out back, to his shed & see his latest project. We had no clue. Grampa was always working on something. When we all got out there, the yard was dimmly lit by the moon & the back porch light. He slowly opened the shed, and there, wrapped ceremoniously in a huge red ribbon, was this hutch. For The Hub & me. From him. Made by him. It was his last piece of woodwork. When we opened up the cabinets, on the inside of the windows, he had placed pictures, only viewable when the cabinets were opened. On the left, were childhood pictures of Hub & myself. On the right, was our wedding picture, & a picture of Grampa & Gramma. A thin strip of white paper was glued in between, and it read “MERRY CHRISTMAS 2000~ GRANDPA & GRANDMA”.
Grampa just passed away this April from a massive stroke. When I get up the courage, I’ll write about him. The wound from losing him, so unexpectedly, is still too fresh. But this hutch will always be one of my greatest treasures.

Its on right now. And I am protesting it. Chris should be there. Elliott should be there. NOT these two. So I boycott. Well, except for the 2 minutes that Chris was on to perform with his idol, Live! (Hub and Princess are watching it.) That was awesome to watch. Can you imagine being able to, not just meet, but to actually sing with your musical hero??? I’d be a giggling little school girl. Oh wait. I don’t have a musical idol. Um, better? Nigella Lawson. If I got to cook (or heck, even clean up after) with her… now that would send me in to a school girl giggling fit. Too cool!!! I’m being such a dork. I know. I just had to babble a little. Ok, maybe, just maybe, I’ll crack and go see who wins it. Maybe.

I had a different pic that I was going to use for my innaugural Treasure Tuesday post. Then last night, after dinner, Hub & Sophia had to “run to the store for ice cream”. Aaahhhh….. quiet time for Mommy. When they came home, Sophia was just beside herself to present these to me. And it had to be known that they were from her for Mommy. “Not from Daddy”. Â
Not to worry, though. Daddy did in fact come home with two huge buckets of ice cream for himself.
I’m really looking forward to doing Treasure Tuesday. Gratitude is always a beautful thing. And its nice to stop and smell the roses…. er, flowers, I mean.
Thank you, Kathryn, for introducing me to this meme! And to learn a bit more about this, or join the fun, go say “Hi!” to Faith, the Faithful Mommy that started this one.
Oh yah… the drive thru. But seriously…
Since when is McD’s this “classy” of a joint??
