Its 4:26am
scene one
“maw-MEEE!” Sophia screams.
“Shhh, yes baby?” I try to say as unstartled as possible.
“Maw-MEE!!!! Mangia!”
“No, baby, we don’t mangia at night. We sleep.”
“NNNOOOO!” she howls. I wipe her bangs out of her face. “Don’t touch my hair, Mommy! Go to your bed, Mommy!”
As I climb back in bed,”Maw-MEEEE! In MY bed!”
“You want me in your bed?”
“NO!”…. long pause….. I swear I slept standing & waiting. “YES! Come snuggle me!”
As I climb into Princess’ bed,”Don’t touch me, Mommy!” So I climb in & scoot as far away as possible, in a twin bed.
Her eyes close.
“Don’t look at me, Mommy!”
“Shhhh, babe, let’s sleep.”
A few moments of silence pass, so I relax & we begin to drift……
scene two
“AAAHHHHHH!” (jolt) “MMmyyyYYY BUM!!!”
“What about your bum, angel?” I say as I begin to feel like The Quiet Old Lady whispering “hush”, and twice my age.
“Snuggle my bum!” (meaning “lay your arm across the small of my back” we’ve discovered.)
“Right here, babe?”
“Yaaahhhhh…..” as she drifts, and I, again, relax.
REM sleep for Mommy.
scene three
“NOT THE ELEPHANT!” (jolt for Mommy) She picks up her snuggle elephant as if she’s going to launch it at the peacefully slumbering Daddy. I grab it & throw it to the floor.
“I want it!… HERE!” I crawl over her, over her bed rails, retrieve the snuggle elephant & put it EXACTLY where she’s beating her pillow ferociously.
“NNNNNOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!” she howls & throws her head back on her pillow & its as if God turned her switch to “off”. Amen, Hallelujah & Good Night/ Morning, whatever.
